The German-Irish Lawyers and Business Association (GILBA) was founded on the 18th of June 1988 in Bonn as a German and Irish Lawyers registered association. It's a charitable registered association under German Law. The association was introduced to the Irish public on the 28th of March 1990 by then German Ambassador, Dr Helmut Rückriegel, before 140 guests in the Incorporated Law Society of Ireland, Blackhall Place.
GILBA is a bilateral professional association and currently has about 180 members based in Germany and Ireland. GILBA provides lawyers, tax consultants, accountants and business people, active in both Ireland and Germany with a forum for the exchange of information and expertise. Among the objectives laid down in GILBA's Memorandum and Articles of Association is the fostering and promotion of personal and professional links between German and Irish members.
The highlight of each year is the annual themed conference, which offers members from Germany and Ireland the opportunity to hear and meet well known expert speakers from the world of science, politics and business. Already in March 2005, over 150 partipants attended the themed conference on the European Constitional Treaty in Dublin. Among the speakers were the then Minister of Finance Brian Cowan and the then Minister of Finance of North- Rhine Westphalia Dr Fritz Behrens. "Is the European Labour Market Overregulated?" was the topic of the following annual conference, which took place at the University of Limerick in September 2006. In September 2007, the then Ambassador of Ireland David Donoghue amongst 120 other participants attended the annual conference with the topic being "The Development of the Financial Centres Germany and Ireland", which took place in Frankfurt.
In 2007 GILBA organised numerous other events, for instance the lecture by the then Ambassor of Germany Christian Friedemann Pauls in Dublin on the 24th of April 2007 or the lecture by EU Commissioner Charlie McCreevy on "Financial Services: recent EU developments" in the Law Society of Ireland, Dublin, on the 7th of December 2007.
To mark the 20th anniversary of our association's foundation the annual conference took place on the truly spectacular Island of Rügen in the Baltic See with that year's conference topic being "Atmospheric Change - Environmental Laws in Ireland and Germany". Among the speaker were the then Irish Minister for the Environment John Gormley and the Minister for the Environment of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Dr. Till Backhaus.
